About 75 Hawaii Preparatory Academy students, in grades four, five and seven, participated in the annual “Get the Drift and Bag It” International Coastal Cleanup Sept. 14. The event, sponsored by The Ocean Conservancy, was coordinated by the Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation, Aquatics Division.
Students working at Spencer Beach Park and near Kawaihae harbor areas gathered 280 pounds of debris including 3,146 cigarette butts, 2,262 caps and lids, and 426 plastic bags or fragments. Seventh-graders analyzed and documented their findings.
Over the past 25 years, The Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup has become the world’s largest volunteer effort for ocean health. About 9 million volunteers from 152 countries and locations have cleared 145 million pounds of trash from the shores of lakes, streams, rivers and oceans on just one day each year.
